Maybe time for an upgrade?

Well, the bio cube surface skimmer that's in my regular tank maybe in need of some help that comes in the nano cube tanks. Remember I don't have a nano cube tank, just a regular 29 gallon tank. That's all I have along with an Aqueon filter in my regular tank. The reason I say it may be in need of some help is because after a couple of weeks, that little wooden cube gets all dark grey and filled with sludge or "crap". Then I change the wooden cube out with a new one. Pretty discusting looking. Does this mean my tank is producing more of a bio load now because of it being a year old or so?

That's what's supposed to happen to the wooden air stone. That's why air stone driven skimmers aren't very effective for saltwater -- they require more maintenance and money to keep replacing them. You can help the situation out by doing larger or more frequent water changes, or you can upgrade skimmers.
