Yes, it's normal. It may take the fish a few days to get comfortable enough to come out.

Thanks.... I was a little worried that I purchased the only fish that's going in my tank and that I'd never see him..
aclimatised him with the lights off. drip method. took about an hour before I netted him from the bag which contained mostly tank water and then placed him in my aquarium. left the lights off until they turned themselves on at 10am.

It sounds like you did a proper acclimation. So I don't think that would cause a problem.
