Octopus BH-1000 protein skimmer

Could anyone who has this skimmer tell me what the blue sponge (packed in the reaction chamber) is for? The illustration only shows one sponge (black) that sits in the return chamber. Is the blue sponge needed? Much thanks!

It may just be packing for shipment.
I don't recall my skimmer coming with an "extra sponge".

You only need the black one to the best of my knowledge (to stop microbubbles) from entering the tank (well....try to stop microbubbles anyway).
