painting Hermits

Tomorrow I'm going to the lfs to pick up some spare shells for my hermit crabs to try to prevent them from slaughtering my snails....
I thought it'd be fun to paint the shells first, but have 2 questions:

Is there a type of paint that would be safe?
Think it's cruel and unusual? I think it'd be funny!

I think the paint would just end up covered by coraline. My crabs shells are bright purple lol.

When I went to one of the larger pet stores, I asked if they had any empty shells. They had a bunch to choose from. Some were painted already. I avoided those. I try to avoid putting things in my tank that don't belong. Don't want to risk anything toxic!

yep pretty much inevitable that they will all get covered with coraline and it wouldnt be visible anyways.

although the painting could be fun and you could identify each hermit individually that way, I do try to keep my reef looking like a reef and avoid anything unnatural.
