Running carbon

I am thinking of doing a blackout to fight a case of dinos that I have going on in my 40. I wanted to run some carbon during the blackout. Do I just hook up my hob filter and put a bag of carbon in it stuffing it down in where the filters would usually be or should I sort of lay it in front of where the water comes back out of the filter so that all the water runs through it before reenetering the tank? Should I place any kind of prefilter on top of it? What I'm really concerned about is how to place the carbon to get the full effect of it.

Water always takes the path of least resistance. Your will probably get better result putting it on the output in the front of the filter.
For best results it should be run in a reactor.
