Starting Corals

I have the Reefbreeders Value Fixture and as far as my trace elements go, Ca is in the proper range but I do not test for the other elements. I use the Instant Ocean Reef Crystals salt mix and do water changes once a week so those levels should be fine as well. I know if I get a clam I will have to start testing for Mg

You will be able to keep anything under your light. I would take the leather and/or LPS for a test drive first before getting on the SPS. LPS generally isn't as demanding as SPS so to speak with parameters. This way you can gain some experience keeping corals and how they react to any changes that may occur. As you get more familiar you will be able to tell when something isn't quite right just by looking at your coral. Just my two cents;)

Hey,

So in a few weeks I am thinking of starting to add some corals and wanted your opinions on the 3 that I had in mind. here they are, I am also open to suggestions!

I agree with this, however i have found potential issues with water parameters before corals start to show it from testing. I test Ca and Mag every 2 weeks and the basics weekly. After a while you'll find a routine that works well for you.

I totally agree and I should of added that I do test. I was only trying to state how in tune you can become with your tank and how much it can tell you if you are paying attention;)

So I was thinking about instead of doing the SPS I would do a zoa like this and as far as testing goes I test weekly. I am in the process of finding a good Mg test kit. I am open for suggestions on that.

I'm not sure what's the best test kit out there. I've tried the salifert and was pricey, I got inaccurate readings with two of the same kit. Right now I'm using the red sea 3 in 1 kit with alk, cal, and mag. Seems to be alright, not sure which test kit is right, depends on which kit I suppose....

My first coral was a pulsing xenia, it was very cool that it moved on its own, these days I'm not so happy as my interest has gone to sps and that xenia I cut up continues to grow. I think zoas are a great way to go, no matter how long your in the hobby everyone has them.
