Sump Cleaning

I'm embarrassed to ask this question, but I don't know the answer. What is the best way to clean one's sump? I haven't cleaned it in over a year (I know) and it seems to have a lot of gunk built up in it. Should I take everything out and rinse it in saltwater until clean? What are the Do's and Don'ts of this process? Thanks!

Every time I do a water change,my sump gets washed out.I unhook the drain pipes, pull the return pump, and take the sump out to the water hose where it gets washed out good.
But keep in mind, mines just a sump.Theres no sand or rock in it at all.

My sump also doesn't contain any sand or rocks. Just the pump for the skimmer and the return pump. I clean those pumps about once a year.

Thanks guys, I don't have any rock or sand in mine either. I think I'll clean it some this weekend.
