Sump Cleaning

I'm embarrassed to ask this question, but I don't know the answer. What is the best way to clean one's sump? I haven't cleaned it in over a year (I know) and it seems to have a lot of gunk built up in it. Should I take everything out and rinse it in saltwater until clean? What are the Do's and Don'ts of this process? Thanks!

i dont clean mine at all juat the pumps that run the tank and gfo

for me i have a lot of sand that i refuse to touch since it is almost 8in and a ton of rock almost as much as that is in my tank.

My sump also doesn't contain any sand or rocks. Just the pump for the skimmer and the return pump. I clean those pumps about once a year.
