okay so what is the differences between the t-5s at the pet shop and the ones at the home improvement stores

They hold different bulbs. The ones at the pet store put out a specific spectrum that corals can grow under, the home improvement stores put out light to see by.

T5's for Aquariums are know as "HO" or High Output, at hardware store they are not. The difference is that the bulbs at the hardware store run at about half the wattage of the High output bulbs. You cant just replace the bulbs either because you need a ballast that can put out more power to run the HO's...

Basically, the sockets for the bulbs at the hardware wont fit into a fixture made for coral bulbs and vise versa

Actually, if that are T5's they are the same sockets, but your correct about the proper light spectrum they produce.

48" t-5 HO are 54 Watts a bulb.
