Reefing newb
I am working on a plan to upgrade my 29gal reef tank. I want to go with a 180 gal. My ?? is do I need to recycle the new tank if I move my rock from the 29 gal. I am thinking of getting new substrate and 180 lbs of dry rock. Than I would add the 40lbs of year old "live rock" from my 29 with all the coral and fish. I have a few small corals two clowns a fire fish and algea blenny, cuc and cleaner shrimp. I guess to keep it simple would the 180 gal still cycle because of the large upgrade or if I didn't add anything but what I allready have would it be like a really big water change.:12:

It would cycle I think. Probably the best thing to do is to get all of the rock for the 180 then when it's done cycling then you can just move your fish in to it.

I don't think it will. You are using mature, established live rock, and the rest will be dry rock, correct? I would use all new sand -- don't try to recycle your old sand unless you wash it thoroughly.
