Water change question ?

I did my first major water change today of 40% to help reduce nitrates. Question how long should I wait before testing for nitrates? Fingers crossed hoping to be 20 ppm or below. I was at 40 ppm before water change. Tank has been up 34 days today.

Also, don't expect to see nitrates drop below 20. 40% of 40 is 16. So expect them to drop to around 25 or so.

Ok should I perform another large water change or weekly 10% changes to get below 20. My tank is 29 gallon with 36 lbs of live rock.

Just tested Nitrate by my test I'm at 20 ppm
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
PH 8.2
Water temp 79

I wouldn't do anymore large water changes. Just set up a schedule for a 10%-15% WC per week and stick to it. You will still see things you don't like, but they will pass in time. Remember to KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF THE TANK. Both realistically and figuratively. The less you mess with it the better. I learned this the hard way.

Wow good info I have my hand in it daily cleaning etc. better get some gloves
