Water changes

Hi everyone.

This is my first post, great forum guys!

Have just started with a 50 gallon FOWLR tank. I understand that i should therefore perform weekly water changes of 5 gallons?

My main question is, for water changes, how do I go about warming five gallons of fresh salt water prior to putting it into the tank? Will adding 5 gallons of water not at the exact temp be harmful?

Thanks

Hello and welcome Tom!

You should be doing either weekly water changes of five gallons or bi-weekly water changes of ten gallons.

Most of us have a separate heater just to bring the water up to temp before putting it in the tank. Ideally it should be the same as the temp in the tank.

Get yourself a heater for making up saltwater for water changes, and another as a backup for your display tank - heaters are the most failure prone piece of equipment in our hobby
