My friend's reef

Reefing newb
I requested his permision to post here his reef. This is more beautiful than i could pictured it.
He is working in a big pet shop and al the good stuff falls under his hands :grumble:.

He is having the most beautifull reef professional set up. This includes a 460 gallons tank incastrated in wooden furniture, 60 gallons extensions with live sand, live plants and algae eaters + some other goodies. A not so huge protein skimmer but which was 899$. A huge canister filter professional with salinity mixer, water stabilizer + some other extra functions including traces injection. He did not let me picture his equipment but i can do it when he is not home :bounce:.
His tank is filled with many corals, mushrooms, anemones. My biggest pleasure is seeing an "indian anemone" this is huge. Any way so far this is the most beautiful reef i've ever seen. It doesn't require many maintenance and everything runs almost by itself.

Well, it's good to see that there's at least one reefer with a successful tank! :grumble:

Must be all those alternative methods and ideas. Wow they really do work.

So he has a standard looking tank with a sump, fuge, overpriced european skimmer, and canister filter.

okayyyyy.... :12:

Okay, so why have you been trying to argue that skimmers are bad and don't work, and are harmful to corals? If "the most beautiful reef tank" you have ever seen uses a skimmer (and an extremely overpriced one, might I add), then where are you getting your argument from?

i am not saying a word. oh i want to but i am not going to get banned you just keep reading your book inbetween the lines and making up youe own conclusions.

Because the opinion about protein skimmers are split. Some experienced aquarists don't like them considering them bad some other can't imagine a tank without them. Some others don't have a clue and are confued (like me). These PSK are doing nothing than trying to copy the sea waves crushed on the beach shore or the heavy rain. Is it unknown and unlikely if through this (Siphoning) procedure the sea washes its waters. Very often the nature cannot be copied and not by a (stupid piece of plastic) and a pump. Sorry i am not trying to be smart in anyways but this is what a protein skimmer is. AN OVERPRICED CHAMBER OF PLASTIC WHICH ACCELERATES AND MIX THE WATER WITH AIR) since the water is marine and having salt there is a result; foam. Put marine salt into a container and wash it under a sink with pressure and you'll see the same foam as you'll see in a psk.
Since i am not experienced i am only reading their comments.

Btw following the majority i bought a protein skimmer a few days ago and i installed it but i don't see any foam coming into the collection chamber. I was playing with the air controller but still nothing.
Is it because of the water that is new?

Most skimmers take 2 to 3 weeks to break in and start working. During that time, you should turn it down (if you can adjust it), so it doesn't overflow, and don't expect any crud.

If you are using water conditioners, stress coats, or medications then those can cause your skimmer to stop working. Which is why you should only use RODI water, and not tap water, if you are running a skimmer.

another one of these threads...

Tank looks great.

Skimmers are great and anyone who doesnt like them has a old fashion mentality.

i agree with one of those points....
skimmers are way overpriced for what they physically are - it is just a simple piece of plastic with a pump. I think on my next tank I'll try to make my own...
