Yes I have noticed less surface muck and more celerity to the water in general as far as nitrates they always measure undetectable. And the small cyano bloom (which I get every year around the same time the weather starts to get hot) is almost gone.

Odd. Once the temp reached over 80 here, I noticed a slight cyano bloom too. I wonder what causes that?

I've noticed over the last few weeks that my water changes were no longer keeping up with the calcium and magnesium uptake and alk was on the decline. So after a lot of reading and research I decided to start dosing. My question is, is anyone making there own additives? @mariobrothersleeve, @emmett0122 , @salt_for_brains, @ReeferRob, @Washburn82,

I did the 2 part from brs. They have a whole set up, all in one for 130 bucks. It comes with pumps and additives. The online mixture is awesome too, alot stronger. Google making alk for a reef tank and it will come up. Honestly once your cal and alk are in check, I haven't dosed any mag. It's been 5 months now.

i use seachem's reef fusion if i need to dose i just had drop in alk about a 2 weeks ago so i had to dose part 2 of it cuz i am getting really good coraline growth right now and the acro's seem to like the alk up around 11 DKH but for the most part the water changes seem to keep up but i dont know for how much longer

I mix pickling lime (kalkwasser) in my top off water. My ATO adds it when ever my sump drops an 1/8" from evaporation.

Yeah brs has a nice package, but I'm not running a sump. I guess a could rig up a dosing system inside my hood, I'll have to think about that.
That what I was doing for a while but in the last three weeks I can't seem to keep up with it.
That's maintaining your alk and water changes are enough for cal?

I am thinking of ordering brs 2 part. I like the packages they have. But I'm wondering if it's worth the money.
Calcium chloride is $5 for a 50 lb bag, baking soda is is $1.50 and Epsom salts is $4. And if you use dr. Randy Holmes second recipe magnesium chloride is $5 for a 50 lb bag. So $16 and some rodi water and you have the same thing the name brands are selling. What's everyone's thoughts on this?

Yes it maintains cal and alk between water changes. It is a cheap, easy and effective method that I have been using for years.

The amount you use, the brs system is not bad. I have the same jugs from the first set up and have about 3/4th left. I'm Going threw about a gallon of mix solution per month so that tells you how much you go threw. If you get a 50# bag, that will last you the entire time your in the hobby unless you buy a 50000g tank. Sitting on the minerals don't seem bad, bug the baking soda will absorb everything if not covered. Your choice, their reef calculator is set up for their mixtures and for a 36g, I can't see more than 20 mls per day.
2nd, you can just run the hose next to the outlet of that new sweet assed skimmer you just purchased. You don't need a sump to dose. Once you get the system you'll see what I mean. Pumps are good to pump from floor to tank btw.
