    another algae problem

Yeah, we don't drink the stuff. Maybe I will put some phosphate eater in the holding can for the water changes.

    another algae problem

Thanks for the ideas. I have been changing the water only 10-15% a month, as when I test it it has been OK. (Phos <= 0.1) I always have Phos gaurd in the filter(large RENA cannister.) I live in an old farmhouse and the AQ is in the living room, there is no room for a refugium type...

    another algae problem

I see some familiar names still here. I have been gone but everything has been going fairly well tank wise. Except for this I just read the previous algae thread. I don't know what bryopsis is, but I have a serious problem with green algae that looks like hair. I have pulled out good sized...

    algae problem

I have so much to learn. I really want to do this right, and I think I'm starting to get the big picture. On another note, I see you live in Fairbanks. Have you been there long? My brother lived in Anchorage for about 14 years, and I was there 2x and we did fly out fishing trips out to...

    test kits

Thanks, I almost bought a red sea, it had what I wanted but was about 2x the price of the api. I haven't seen the other where i'm at.

    Rock Lifts?

I have read something about using small sections of pvc as a frame(picture a square) to lift the LR up to create more surface area with the water, not weigh so much and it could also make hiding places if you wanted. Supposedly if done right and the rocks were epoxyed together you wouldn't see...

    test kits

I was wondering what kind(brand) tests are considered most accurate. there are so many brands, with pretty wide price differences. Any suggestions?

    algae problem

wow. now trying to distill this down, the bio balls (which I haven't touched when cleaning the filter so they would grow good bacteria) in the filter are competing with my LS and LR for food. And the same with what ever good bac. that may have built up on any filtering medium in the power...

    algae problem

Thanks again, all. Actually I cleaned the filter feb 5th and then mar. 5th, I was going to try a monthly cleaning so I would get some bio filtration in there, too. I have no problem doing it more often, I will go to weekly and add some phosphate removal. I do have a 3" sand bed, started...

    algae problem

thanks, Piggy. I was worried about keeping my 2 flame scallops, 2 brittle stars and 2 feather dusters alive. HA. I am running a canister filter, a medium size RENA. I have cleaned it 2x since I set up in Jan., no straight charcoal just different filter pads and some bio balls and chemi...

    algae problem

Help! Everything has been going fairly well so far, but I now have a gross algae problem. This stuff started on the sand and is spreading to the rocks. It is basically reddish, and appears slightly opaque. as it grows, it is getting little strands and is getting thicker. What is this stuff and...

    Brown/rusty stuff on rocks

thank you, Bifferwine. I have 4 nasarrius about the size of nickels, I'll get more. also do you leave your blues on as much or at the same time as your whites? And do you know if the the blues contribute to the brown growth?
