    Carnation Coral Tank

Thanks reeffreak, I hadn't thought of that and it sounds like an awesome idea.

    Carnation Coral Tank

sorry ccCapt, what I mean is that it has about half the concentration of organic compounds and nitrates that it would have if I didn't have it hooked to a volume of water that is the same as the tank itself. I obviously can't speak for every system the same size of mine, I was just generalizing...

    Cycling of my tank

Lol, without any advice to start with it sounds like you're off to an awesome start. Starting slow with small amounts of live rock for a slow and easy cycle, 2 Koralia 3's for flow, T5 lighting, knowing you need a protein skimmer...it's like you don't need our advice at all! You're going to have...

    Carnation Coral Tank

Ya biff, that was what I was thinking. But who knows? Maybe these corals will absolutely hate the huge swings in nitrates from high levels down to 0 and would prefer a constant higher level. My sps tank is also just an sps tank, nothing else (except my harlequin shrimp) so the water coming from...

    Carnation Coral Tank

Well the point of the water changes in this case is not to replace elements (if the only reason I did water changes was to replace elements I'd just dose more), but to lower the huge amounts of nitrates I expect to build up from such heavy feeding which I think is probably the key to keeping...

    Carnation Coral Tank

I've decided it's time to attempt my carnation coral tank. I'm planning on using a little 3 gallon nano and feeding huge amounts of DT's with 100% water changes every week. Does anybody have any extra advice on how to get these things thriving? All I plan on keeping are carnation corals in this...

    Montipora danae advice

Thanks for the advice capt, the alkalinity level could definitely be an issue right now, I keep my tank at 13 dKH so I think I'll let it drop down to 10 and see how he does.

    Montipora danae advice

Thanks jag, I've got him under 150's in my tank but I think you're right, I've moved him into a little bit of shade and I'll see how he does.

    Montipora danae advice

I've been waiting for about 6 months to get my hands on a Montipora danae and one finally showed up on the list a few weeks back at my work. It came in brown, angry, and wildcaught. Any advice on getting these things to color up or any preferances they have for parameters and food over other...

New ORA Purple Stylo, ORA Frogskin Acro

I have one of those frogskin acros (A. tortuosa I think), and it has colored up nicely under my MH's. Starting to turn a very pretty light blue with teal polyps. Mine started out just the way yours looks and it took about 2 weeks to really start bluing up.

    Black Longspine Urchin Question

Their spines are all black but I'd be willing to bet there are more than one species of urchins that fit the general Black Longspine description. A few of them have a somewhat more prominent purple tint to their spines, if that makes a difference.

    Black Longspine Urchin Question

I just watched one of my black longspine urchins that I've had for about 4 months now eat a track up one of my $80 ORA Acro frags and crawl back down. This would explain why 2 of my other Acros look like somebody has scraped flesh/skeleton off with a potato peeler. Has anybody else seen this...

    Problems...

I've had my urchins find a spot of algae they particularly liked and chill on it for a day or so. I wouldn't be too worried about him, If he's not a venomous species I'd pick him up and see if his tube feet start searching for a foothold and if he starts waving his spines. As for toxicity, I...

    What is this?

Stomatella imo. They're great snails, used to be my whole cleaning crew until I got into urchins.

    Freshwater question..

That sucks about the pleco. Blackouts are definitely easier to do than the medication regimen as well.

    30 gal tank.

I have a 26 gallon bowfront and I don't consider it a nano. I've been perfectly happy with my little tank as well, and honestly, I think there are some significant advantages to having a small tank. First being that water changes are much easier to do in large quantities. I do 20 gallons a week...

    Freshwater question..

We've had freshwater slime in our 125 plant tank at work a few times. Erythromycin in combination with Paraguard seems to do the trick. This usually doesn't negatively affect any plants, although, snails don't like the erythromycin. Otherwise, you can black the tank out for about 4 days like...
