    LED v. 400 MH

Thanks Waddi. Looks too hard for someone of my low electrical DIY skills.

    LED v. 400 MH

Thanks Northstar24! This is exactly the information I needed. I take it your corals made it through the transition okay then.

    LED v. 400 MH

Hey, it's been a while but I am back. I'm thinking of replacing my two 400W MH lights with LEDs. Has anyone had good (or bad) luck with LEDs? Can they grow corals, clams, etc.? I like the idea of LEDs because, (1) less heat, (2) less noise, (3) lower electric bills, (4) longer lamp life, (5)...

    hair algea

Thanks PRC. Can you recommend a good algae scrubber?

    I want an Angelfish

Well, I bet you all can guess my recommendation....yep...a majestic. I got my majestic as a juvenile and have had success with him so far. It all depends on 1) the type of corals you want to keep, and 2) the individual personality of the fish you get. Mine does not eat LPS or SPS, but did eat...

    hair algea

RIJohn, what CUC organisms did you use? I am dealing with a terrible hair algae outbreak. This stuff is all over my tank. (I blame this on the fact that have been using reef crystals that were sent to me insted of the Instant Ocean I ordered, but that is probably just superstision). I have...

    Fuge- Sand or Mud

I use about 6 inches of sugar sized aragonite sand on top of a plenum. I have never had any problems with this.

    Holy Crap

Sounds like my office. ;) I understand your point, but children are different than fish. I mean, people EAT fish! I would be shocked to see people eat children. I would also be shocked if there were Local Children Stores (LCS's) where I could go buy a child. I would be shocked if I saw people...

    Holy Crap

Am I the only one that isn't angry at this guy? I think he will soon suffer some disappointments, but I don't t hink he is evil, and he does not make me sick. I see him as uninformed, but still a person who shares my interest in this rather obscure hobby. He will probably be really upset when...

    red slime remover

Try directing your skimmer's overflow to an emptly 5gallon bucket, then just let it overflow until its's done (changing the bucket when needed). Replace the water that is removed with brand new salt water. This will be like doing water changes, and will let you know when things are back to normal.

    400w Metal Halide Fixtures

I agree with daugherty. I run 400s in my DT and need to introduce each new coral by putting it at the bottom of my tank, then slowly moving it up. If I don't do this, they get sunburned (which means they bleach)

Can I put shells from the ocean in my tank?

Sens, I didn't know that the shells will disolve. Very cool. Do you know if this helps add Ca2+ to the tank?

    Adding sand

When you add the sand, the tank will become very cloudy, and could potentially start a small cycle. You may want to move both animals to a separate tank until the dust settles and you are comfortable your parameters are stable. Also, your tank may be a bit young for an anemone, so I would...

    Storing Live Sand?

Throw it in a bin with the proper salinity and the proper temperature, and I see no reason why it would not remain alive and egg-smell free.

What to look for in LR

Bring a 5 gallon bucket to put your live rock in. Many LFS will simply wrap your life rock in paper to keep it wet and keep the bacteria alive on your way home. That's what my LFS did, and when I got home, i noticed a dead, but beautiful purple and yellow basslet that had been hiding in the...

    Emerald crabs

Great choice for a new addition. Emerald's are one of the few crab species that are not entirely evil. Bless their little hairy legs.

    My patience is running out.

Thanks Biff. I had a goni back around the turn of the millennium, I watched as he slowly faded away and died...I'm just not sure I'm ready for that kind of pain again. ;-) Truth is, goniopora is the coral that got me out of fish-only tank and into the reef, but I still don't understand...

    My patience is running out.

Absolutely Wonton. And I do other dumb things too, like keep a navarchus in a reef. But i would be remiss to engage in risky behaviour and keep any information I learn from the good people here at Living Reefs. :-) Kids, do not try this at home. Now if i just had the balls to get a...
