    Levittown 55

Myrtle, a percula clown, must have ingested something and it seems as though it got stuck in his gill, unfortunately he didn't make it. Living on the East coast, I thought after Sandy that I was probably really close to losing the other inhabitants in my tank as we were without electric for...

    Percula Clown

He died last night, nothing noticeable as far as being discoloured or anything till the very end. He was perfectly normal before yesterday.

    Percula Clown

Tank FOWLR parameters are Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate and Ammonia all at 0 ppm, Temp is showing 80 and salinity is at 1.0245. I change the water weekly and use RO-DI water. Today my wife found my percula clown, that I had purchased as one of a pair in mid May, laying on the bottom nearly...

    serpent starfish

I agree with the skimmer in sump, and will do that eventually with a better skimmer, the Coralife is what they sell. Honestly, this is the first hobby that I have had that has so many different facets and schools of thought.

    serpent starfish

Yote, I hear what you are saying, I know that no one is perfect. However, the guy just gave me a list of tangs that he would recommend for my 55 gallon tank and told me that serpent stars were bad if I wanted to keep my fish, did I mention that he tried to upsell me to an eheim canister verses...

    serpent starfish

I thought I read that before on here, I guess the LFS guy either doesn't get real serpents, didn't want to sell me one or boy I'm stumped on why he would tell me that. The first time I met the guy, probably my inexperience skewed my views, he seemed really knowledgeable and seemed to care...

    serpent starfish

Thanks to both of you. I read the posts on this site a lot and the views expressed here heavily influence my decisions. As such, I find it ironic when one salesperson, at the LFS I go to, suggested I join a salt water tank forum, but when I return to the store to ask questions, I find myself...

    advantage of sump?

But all your equipment needs to have the capacity to process volume of both tanks combined, right? My thought was that with the extra lr and larger skimmer, it could handle a larger bioload, but I understand that fish simply need their space. Thanks.

    serpent starfish

Thanks to both of you. The LFS keeps them with the brittle stars and the look almost identical. I don't have any reef yet, but is there a good starfish to have in a 55 gallon tank?

    serpent starfish

I asked about a serpent starfish at the LFS and was quickly told that they will consume my fish. Reading about them on here and liveaquaria, I thought l one might be a good additional to my cuc. I was surprised when he told me that as I assumed starfish aren't like a Venus flytrap that would...

    advantage of sump?

I have been thinking more about the addition of a sump to my system and had a question I couldn't find the answer to searching past threads. Does the additional water volume add to dt volume to figure maximum number of fish allowed in dt, or is only the volume of the dt itself come into play...

RO unit or just buy RO water

I bought ro/di water from LFS for $.50 per gallon and later purchased a ro/di unit as it was very cost effective to make my water at home. I told my wife that it was worth spending the $130 on the unit because then I would reduce the need to visit the LFS and bring home all the extra stuff I...

    Levittown 55

Yeah, I read that they should be added last in a couple of older threads. I can add only one or two fish to keep with the one fish per ten gallon rule. Guess I'll need to think about if I want 5 or 6.

percula misbar clown harassing hermit crab

I'm guessing the treasure chest as well for nesting. But harassing the crab was something I hadn't noticed before yesterday and she was persistently pushing him along. Also, the one time I noticed her doing her nesting thing, moving the substrate around the proceeding to lay in that spot, it...

    Levittown 55

Yeah, I read several threads on here beforehand that said the coral beauty could be fine, and many don't bother anything. However, I wanted to think about it some more and now I probably have at least a month to think about adding another fish and all the possibilities of which one to pick! I...

    Levittown 55

Went to the LFS last night and saw a coral beauty and asked about it but didn't purchase as the guy strongly discouraged me from buying any angel if I plan on adding reef to my tank. He then started telling me about some tangs that he would recommend for my 55 gallon tank. I remember reading...

percula misbar clown harassing hermit crab

I thought maybe she is nesting but she hasn't seemed to stay in one spot for any period during the day. The crab was on the substrate and she just kept him moving all the way across the tank. She is a mid to high level out in the open swimmer most of the time when the lights are on. She...

percula misbar clown harassing hermit crab

This evening I noticed that the female of my clownfish pair was harassing one of the blue leg hermit crabs, to the point that she pushed him to the other side of the tank, prodding him with her nose. My wife flipped the crab back over, moved him to the other end of the tank and the clown got...

    All dry rock

I subscribe to a link for Mr. Saltwatertank, and he recently did a 265 build with all dry rock using Dr Tims One and Only. It looks like it works from his posts very quickly versus cycling with live rock, but as I personally have never used it, I can only speak on what I have read.
