Hermit Vs. FeatherDuster

I just got a 9 inch or so featherduster. I propped him up against a shell. In the LFS he was just laying on the sand. The hermits are crawling over him. Should I bury the less protected, clear end (not the duster itself) in the sand? Anyone seen a hermit chow on a feather duster? (Something chowed on part of a much smaller, hitchhiker featherduster in my tank last weekend.)

i put mine in the rockwork the one i had trouble messing with itwas my wrasse who eventually ate it
