Protein skimmer setup?

Ok I am working with a fresh water tank in prep to one day convert the equipment/tank into a saltwater tank. My wife purchased a protein skimmer and I am just not sure of the setup.
Can someone explain the basic setup of one? This is a back of tank mount system, with the large canister, pump, overflow hose, and breather hose.
Kit has basic assembly instructions but that is it...very basic. :grumble:
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Protein skimmers wont work on a freshwater tank, but the skimmer you have mentioned also isnt a very good skimmer. Can you return it?
