That's sad your friend lost both his clowns. There is nothing worse than losing a fish. I don't think many people understand that. One time my friend from England was staying over my house and noticed my regal angelfish had jumped out of the tank and died overnight. There was just no way that guy was going to understand my grief.
Anyway, there are so many factors affecting so many different aspects of our hobby it is hard to really put a causal relationship together between any two elements. I am guessing that your friend's fish were already sick when they were treated, and that may have been the ultimate cause of death. I still advocate the use of Maracyn Two, but obiously it would be better if one could avoid treating with any medicine at all.
