Tap water filter (?) vs RO unit...

Does anyone use a simple "tap Water Filter" (brand name API) vs a small RO unit for home water filtering?
I've been cruising around on a few websites and seeing things I never knew were out there. But also too new and "green" to have any experience to fall back on.

It's replacement filters are expensive and only last for about 20 gallons or so. It's only one stage of filtration, so not good enough for saltwater aquariums. And with how often you have to change the filter, you'd be saving money by just buying an RODI unit (the filters of an RODI unit only need to be changed about once a year).

You can get a good RODI unit (5 stages or so) for around $150.

I knew I would get a good answer......Actually looking at a few RO thingies......Not nearly as pricey as I had expected.....after what I have spent in "dead fish"...actually a bargain!!!
