When most new aquarists find out about UV Sterilizers, they ask the LFS people if it really works. Often what is said is something like," It will kill about as much beneficial bacteria as the bad kind." What I learned is that most beneficial bacteria is on the surface of rocks,sand, and the aquarium itself. I also learned that there isn't as much enforcement about what the manufacturers can put on labels as there is with the FDA and something like meat for people. This means that the box may say it will work for 200 gallons (of freshwater), but it might only be equipped for a 40 gallon reef tank. Can you guys tell me the truth to this?
