What's Wrong With My Refractometer?

Tonight my hubby decided to calibrate our refractometer (been awhile since it was done so just wanted to check it). It did need a small adjustment. Then he tried to check the water in our tank and the refractometer just stayed on zero. Any ideas why it would stop working? It's only about 6 months old and we've never had problems with it before. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

It doesn't have a manufacture's name on it but I bought it from Foster & Smith. It's model number RHS-10ATC. I only have to wait 30 seconds to take a reading because it has automatic temperature compensation. Thank you for your reply.

with most refractometers you can also adjust the focus of the lens, the line just might be out of focus. Mine adjusts by twisting the eye piece

I'm using the calibration fluid that I ordered with the refractometer.

Edit: Thanks Little Fish, I'll check that to see if it might be my problems.
