Come on guys. Expensive is a relative term.
As CEO of my own corporation I can tell you that this is exactly how it is done in America. You take an average product and then mark up up 3 or 4 hundred percent. Of course you never have return customers after they find out how bad you screwed them but there will always be another sucker; right?
At the same time I take every penny of profit at the top and pay it to myself in salary and bonuses. To help achieve this I demand that all of my employees work at a non living wage.
Profit declines because of my ridiculous mark up; the answer to this is simple. I just raise the prices more and or set up a dummy corporation to buy from my existing corporation. I call this sales to my original corporation which keeps my bonuses coming.
When the whole thing collapses because of my unethical business practices I go before congress (in my Lear jet) and ask for a bail out. When I get it of course I call it profit and right myself bonus checks out of it.
It is as simple as that. Even a cave man could do it.
