    Cyano infection?

Hi All! Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Everything has been running smoothly, and everybody seems to be happy. But in the past few weeks I've started to notice pink "blotches" on my sandbed, which seem to be getting deeper, and spreading. I can also see that it seems to be deeper in the...

    Anenome look ok?

My bubble-tip has been in the tank for about 2 weeks now. Added the clown after the first few days. He wandered around for the first 3 days, but has been stable ever since. Sometime he "wraps up" the clown at nighttime, but other times his tentacles are withdrawn (like the last couple pics). The...

    Some type of macro algae?

I think this came along with my ricordia (sp?). Didn't notice it until 2 days ago, even though the Ric. has been in the tank about 3 weeks. Whatever it is seems to be growing pretty fast. Any ideas? -bk (ps. I never realized the depth of that ricordia until I took this macro shot)

    Is this a "Brain Coral"?

I haven't been able to positively ID it with others I've seen yet. If it is, I'm told they have "Long Sweeper Tentacles" that are usually extended at night. So far I haven't seen it look any different than it looks in this picture (haven't seen any tentacles extended). Should I keep looking? I'd...

    Electrical load?

I've had my system running for two months now - was shocked when I received my utility bill this morning. It normally runs about $50/month (gotta love San Diego!) But this month was $150. Have the following electrical load on my tank: - Lights: 6-bulb 24" T5. Running 12/hrs per day - Pump...

    Coral too close to polyps?

Good morning! Two weeks ago I added Xenia and Zooanthids. Both were doing awesome. Last week I added a Favia (I think?) and Frogspawn. The latter additions are doing well, but most of the zooanthid polyps have stopped opening. I notice that the ones not opening are closest to the Favia, which...

Finally have the beginnings of a Reef Aquarium!

Still a long way to go, but here's what I have after two months. I'm curious - Is my "Frogspawn" (pic #3) really frogspawn? I've seen other pictures on here where they almost look like anenomes; mine looks more like elongated bubble corals. Or has it just not extended out as much as it should...

    Skimmer question

I have the Bubble Magus 3+. Wondering how good / and how often I should clean it? Is it ok to wait until the cup is almost full (takes about 2 days), or should I be emptying it more often? Also is it ok to empty and rinse, or is it better to give it a better cleaning each time? As a...

    Added fish - too much?

Figured it was time. Decided on Cromis, since they're "easy" to start with. LFS talked me into 5, since they will school. Acclimitized and added them yesterday evening. All seemed comfortably, running around picking off copopods. This morning could only find 3 - they all seem fine. Finally...

    Acclimatizing new inhabitants

Probably butchered that word - hope you get the drift! Can you tell me what method you use when adding a new fish or invert to your aquarium? What about corals? How much "Tank water" should I expect to need to replace, once I'm finished? Thanks! BK

    1st water change with inhabitants

Hi all, Even though nitrates were <5, I went ahead and did my 1st change since adding cleanup crew 2 weeks ago. Had the new water heated, circulating, made sure salinity and temp matched the display tank. I noticed the following: - Nessarus (sp?) snails came out to investigate. Pretty cool...

    Cover or no cover??

I've always been under the impression that the aquarium should be open on top, to allow for better oxygenation. But all of the fish I am considering (Gobies, Firefish, etc...) apparently think the grass is greener outside the tank? What do you guys do, to prevent any of your fishies from...

    Adding Cleanup Crew

Hello all! They have a "Build Your Own Reef Cleaner" special on Liveaquaria.com. It allows you to select a minimum of $60 in cleaners and other inverts, to get free shipping. (URL: Easy Buy Bundles - Build Your Own Reef Cleaner Package ) Would that be too much for my 60 cube? Since it...

    Next question: lack of critters

Ok last time I set up a reef tank (back in "the day"!) I was pleasantly surprised by the copepods, starfish, feather dusters, and other life that showed up during and towards the end of my tank cycle. This time - not so much. Actually haven't seen a thing, even though this time I used LOTS more...

Ok to cycle tank with leftover turkey?

Ok kidding (you have to admit it could be interesting!) I do have a cycling question though. Started my tank up about a week ago, after recovering from a leak in my tank (60 gallon cube) that put a wrench in the works. Have about 4 inches of live sand, and about 35 pounds of live rock...

    RO or RO/DI water?

I'm planning to purchase a filtration system. Would like to get something I can use for drinking water as well as aquarium fills. I've been told it's not good to drink DI water. So can I get by with using RO water in my tank? Or would it be much better to purchase a DI unit? Thanks! BK

Is a skimmer required at startup?

I always though "of course" - it would be needed during the cycle period. But a pro at my LFS tells me I won't need it until after the aquarium is established, and I've added some inhabitants, I hope he's right (save some initial cost), but am pretty sure that's bad advice. Thanks! BK

Starting from scratch - please help me get started

Hello, Just picked up a used 60g "euro-cube". It came with a stand, with a refugium. I'm trying to figure out how the plumbing all goes together - I'm stumped! The main tank has a "baffle"? in the center. There's an opening at the top. Behind the baffle, the tank has two holes going down...

    Greetings from San Diego

Hello everybody, Looks like I finally found a forum that works! :) I am just getting back into s/w, after a 10-year break. I had a CPR MicroReef that was fun, challenging, but being 6 gallons was quite limiting. I just found a used 60-g "cube" with a built-in lighted refugium (or is it a...
