Hell Doc, as cheap as that is just pull the DIO cartridge off and replace it with the fishing carbon filter. At least that is what the two top cartridges appear to be. DIO cartridge is pretty small but with a good RO membrane there will not be much for the DOI to remove anyway. You should not need a booster pump if you have water pressure at 50 psi or higher. A permeate pump will lessen waste water even with good inlet pressure. DIO is OK for drinking water, unless your an athlete and actually using water to replace sweat out fluids. If you add something like Gatorade mix to it or use it for coffee its fine. It just has no electrolytes and is about as tasteless as anything you can find. I use an under the sink RO made to use for drinking water. Where the tube runs out of the pressure holding tank i put in a "T" fitting and ran a line to a 10" DIO cartridge with a ball ball on the exit side with a hose to a Tuffy trash can. Plumbed up this way the faucet which came with the tank puts out water from the RO which has not been through the DIO, therefore it still contains enough ions with taste. I had to a pump in with my installation as I only have 20-25 psi water pressure at the tap which meant a lot of waste (bypass) water and little filtered water. I also doctored it up with adjustable water pressure shutoff switches and removed the standard one which came with the unit. I put in a higher flow high Silica removing membrane when my first membrane wore out (which took two years). The price for the unit recommended by Biff is the cheapest I have ever seen, especially considering a membrane is usually $45 and up and empty 10" filter cartridges are normally $20 each, Carbon and sediment filters usually at least $2 each. The small DIO cartridge has got to be worth $20.
One can afford extra pumps and float switches and such with a unit that cheap. Personally I have never met an individual who has run out 100 gallons of RODI water in just one day, that would be one inpatient person.

that looks awesome. I want one, but have no place to put it.

fatman, I appreciate your efforts in trying to explain to me how to make it work, unfortunately, I am a visual learner and explaining it to me just confused me more. Sorry about that.

All I know is that RODI water is not good for human comsumption long term and I want just RO water for my house and will use it for my tank as well. the way I figure it, if RODI is bad for humans, maybe it is bad for my fish as well? I am sure I am being too simplistic with this line of thinking.

regardless, I may jump ahead to getting one if there is a way to rig it, fatman, to make it do what I want

in all honesty, I have never held an RO unit and do not know the name of a single part. No idea how to set one up or make it work. plumbing and I are not good friends. It takes me the better part of an hour to change a bathroom faucet. I imagine I will take the plunge to get one sooner or later and when I do, I will be calling one of you to help me out.

:bounce: No problem Doc, can almost do it in my sleep. This do hickey goes to that thing a ma bob etc. Luckily I growl when I get disgusted while working instead of cussing or throwing things. People kind of look around with a strange bewildered look on their faces until they realize it is just that strange fatman. I have definitely growled over some plumbing jobs in the past. You would be amazed at some of the nonstandard ways people have used to repair their plumbing. Two part epoxy smeared all over every (yes every) fitting under a kitchen sink was my favorite. I had to replace the sink, which meant disconnecting everything (normally). That time I got to cut everything out and replace it. :frustrat:

yeah. I feel your pain. that is why I mess with heads, it is easier than plumbing, altho plumbing probably pays better

It filled the 30gal can in about 1 hour.My PSI is a wooping 75 Pounds of pressure.I dont even need the option pump.:bounce:I just picked up a Auto float kit to install on it.Its got everything from the float to the shut off valve. It will make my life easier.Well im really tired so ill finish the tank filling tomorrow.(Worked all day).

:bounce:Wow, you can even install a shower massage with pressure like that and really enjoy relaxation. Really it's great you do not need the booster pump. They are expensive and can cause a lot of banging in water feed pipes as they try to draw water faster than the pipes want to deliver. A permeate pump would increase efficiency, but with 75 psi pressure your water will be cheap enough that unless you start supplying friends with water also, the payback period really would not make it worth while. Even an ecologist should see reason in that. Should!

great start. looks so good. what about livestock? i like to start planning weeks before hand so I have a chance to see if I like what I choose. I am such an impulse buyer, if I don't, my tanks never stop evolving

I believe he has some live sand mixed in, and that should help speed along the cycle
