    HELP!!!!!! Holy nitrates.

I need to know the best way to lower nitrate in a tank. Right now my nitrate levels are around 40-50. My fish are dealing with it but I think it is doing a number on my snails. I have done water changes once a week. Only about 4 gals at a time. The tank is a 30 gal with 10 gal sump/refugium. I...

Lowest cost and easiest way to eliminate green hair, bubble, turf and slime algae

This idea sounds real easy to do, however I wonder will it suck up all the nutrition from my cheato algae I have in my refugium.

    Fluval 406?

Thanks. I have a sump and refugium right now but thought, hey a free filter why not. I think I might clean it out anyway that way if I do need it it is ready to go and I can run it in a pinch. Or I will just use it in my qt.

    Fluval 406?

I have recently got a free Fluval 406 from a friend. He was moving and had to give up some pieces of equipment. He used the filter for his freshwater tank. It still has the same sponges and media bags in it along with the ceramic rings. My plan is to clean the filter from top to bottom and...

    test kits

I was wondering if it is possible to have a test kit that could be no good. I purchased the drop test kit when i first got my tank. my ph and ammonia would show change over time, but the nitrite and nitrate have never changed. I tried the test strips and it showed a slit amount of nitrate...

    refugium lighting

Now that I have my refugium set up I was wondering about the lighting. I read both leave the light on 24/7 or just turn them on at night. I am running a cfl at 6500k in my sump. I run my main tank lights white 8hrs, blue atinic 10hr, and led moon lights 24/7. Just wondered what other people do...

    sump return pump

I did some more research and found that the size pipe i have (3/4") will only do about 220gph and my pump is running 381gph. So its clear that either i need to down size my pump or up size my pvc plumbing. My GPH should be right at about the same.

    sump return pump

I am not to worried about animals getting into my overflow because my tank has three back chambers that were a wet/dry system until i mod it.

    sump return pump

So the idea for that is that the hole is below the water level but in the chance of a power outage the hole will be visible. That will put air in the line and break the siphon. thanks for the info.

It becomes overwhelmed. So it sounds like I need to go to the next size up.

    sump return pump

The first chamber has my heater, the second one has live rock and live sand (bout 3 in.) When I get my first fish I will get my micro algae. And the third chamber has my return pump. My protein skimmed is in the back of my main tank. As far as a power outage I have tested it and when my pump...

    sump return pump

I have recently revamped my system by adding a sump with a refugium. i built my own sump out of a 10gal tank with three chambers. Along with; a DIY overflow system made out of 3/4 pvc. I used flex tubing to move the water from place to place along with a ball valve after my return pump so i can...
