    Many thanks!

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the great advice in setting up my new tank. I have a lot of freshwater experience, but this reef thing is a whole new world. Freshwater fish can be cool, but nothing compares to having a miniature Great Barrier Reef in your family room! It's so great to...

    Leaky hose connection

So I bought some 5/8" tubing from my LFS, and it is definitely smaller than the green tubing supplied with the overflow, and it STILL leaked. I filed down the raised seams on the J tube created in the molding process (thanks Ted) and applied a super thin layer of silicone o-ring lubricant. NO...

    Leaky hose connection

The hose Eshopps provided was 5/8", but I'm sure my last freshwater aquarium set-up included a 1/2" hose for the tank return. I'm going to get some 1/2" hose at my LFS and try that.

    Leaky hose connection

If you're talking about a metal hose clamp with a screw on the side, I tried that too, and it still leaked. I may not have tightened it enough, but I didn't want to break or flatten the plastic J tube. Maybe it would work if I really tightened that screw as hard as I could.

    Leaky hose connection

I just hooked up a new sump with overflow box and 350 gph return pump hooked to the 5/8" green vinyl hose supplied by Eshopps. The hose connects to a J-shaped return sprayer with a barbed end. When I turn on the system, that connection leaks like crazy. I've tried cutting the end off the hose...

    Need help fast!

OK, good advice, I'll get a ball valve. And I do have a J tube, so I'll drill the holes to break the syphon:sfish:. Thanks!

    Need help fast!

I have a hang-on-the-back overflow. I just bought a 350 gph return pump (I read on another thread that the gph of the pump should be about 3 to 5 times the number of gallons the tank holds, and I have a 72 gal). I'm not sure how fast the water comes down from my overflow since I couldn't run...

    Need help fast!

I'm posting a picture of my set-up, but it's kind of hard to see everything. The vinyl hose leading back to tank is lying in front. I guess I need a separate return pump to hook this into? The skimmer is a Reef Octopus NW-110-6520B. I've posted a picture of the sump assembled from the box. I...

    Need help fast!

OK, I feel like a moron, but I can't figure this out. I have everything that came with my Reef Octopus sump connected (pump that came with it connects to air intake on end and skimmer on side). It appears that the water discharges from the skimmer back into the sump. So what do I hook the...

    Securing live rock

That's what I thought. Don't want to jump the gun and kill fish. I'll wait it out.

    Securing live rock

I bought a few pieces of live rock today along with dry substrate. Those pieces are sitting on the bottom, but I'll be adding to them soon, so I'll just push them down as far as I can into the substrate. I put about 1.5 inches of substrate in and am filling the tank all the way up so I can...

    Securing live rock

I've assembled my sump, in-sump skimmer with overflow box, and wavemaker w/ powerheads in my empty tank. Today I am going to pick up substrate (not live) and salts and fill my tank about half-way (allowing room for rock). I'm going to wait until tomorrow to pick up live rock and lights, fill...

    Leave out bioballs???

Hey, thanks for all the advice. This initial set-up of equipment can be very confusing. It's great to have help.

    Leave out bioballs???

I've attached a picture of my sump. It's made by Eshopps, holds 5.5 gallons when filled to fill line. I have a Reef Octopus skimmer on order. The prefilter is leaning against the side. I can leave it out and have the water run down living rock below the prefilter box, or just take that box...

    Leave out bioballs???

By sponge do you mean the thin prefilter that sits in the prefilter box? Should I use the prefilter box without the prefilter, or just skip the box altoghether? And finally, should the live rock rubble be submereged below the fill line on the sump, or can I pile it higher if water drips over...

    Leave out bioballs???

So I'm gathering equipment to set up my first reef tank. I purchased a sump with two chambers connected by an opening at the bottom of the divider that came with a bag of bioballs. I've since read that wet/dry filtration is old technology because the bioballs are too good at their job and...

    How many power heads?

Wow, that's 4 x 500gph powerheads. So main difference I've found so far between freshwater and salt water is $$$$$$$$$$!

    How many power heads?

I'm starting a new reef tank for the first time (kept freshwater fish for many years). I have a 72 gal bow front. I've got a 20 gal sump and am planning on buying a Reef Octopus skimmer. The JBJ Oceanstream powerheads look good, but I'm wondering how many 500 gph powerheads I would need for...

Starting a reef tank, need help!

Hi, I'm starting my first reef tank and would love some advice on a good, quiet, in-sump protein skimmer for my 72 gallon bow front. There are so many out there and everyone has a different opinion about them. Help! Thanks!:sfish:
