200gal built in wall

These were taken a week ago. The hair algae has gotten worse. As soon as I get the posting pics to work I will post updates with the algae scrubber in it.

I have noticed some of my crabs looks like they have hair on there shells. Is this bad? I did a 30% water change and my frags are not opening like they usually do. My salinity is 1.025

I just tested my ammonia. I did my water change sunday and today is tuesday. I checked my ammonia before I did the water change and it was .25. I check it today and its almost 1.0. What can I do to get this spike down someone please help

The hair sounds like algae, which is normal... It tends to collect on shells because they can't reach to clean it.

As for your ammonia, nothing you can do but wait it out. You can see if your LFS carries a product called AmQuel or Prime -- both of those will neutralize ammonia, but should only be used in an emergency (as a last resort).

Please remind me, what do you have in your tank again?

I have a bunch of Zoos, mushrooms, lawnmower blenny, sand goby, birds nest, some sps, favia, emerald crabs, blue and red leg crabs, alot of snails, candy canes, alot of frags

I am getting aggervated with my tank. My coral are shrivered up and not opening. The only traces I have is ammonia which is a 1. I have bought stuff to add to the tank and I dosed it yesterday (prime). If I loose my coral I will put a video of my ball bat through the tank on here. I will end up doing another water change Friday to see if that helps.

Try not to get too frustrated...we've all been where you are and was ready to give up. Just continue doing your w/c's, and make sure you're not disturbing the sand when you do them.

Do you think when I cleaned the sand with the vac could of spiked my ammonia

Yep, I used to do the same thing in my old tank, and couldn't figure out why I always had high nitrates. Its best not to disturb the sand bed, cause it releases all the trapped crap and toxins into the water column.

How do I properly clean my tank and keep the sand bed clean

I fed my snakes the other day.

This tank keeps pissing with me I am going to see how 3 boas like salt water at the end of the week.

To keep the sand bed clean, you'll have to get some nass snails, small hermit crabs, etc. You have to find animals that naturally burrow and shift thru sand to keep it turned. If you're gonna clean the sand yourself, then you want to just lightly skim the top layer of the sand.

How often do you change you filter for you ri/do system. Mine is 6 stage system.

It's going to be different for everyone, it depends on how often you're using it and how "dirty" your supply water is. You can test it with a TDS meter and when you start seeing the TDS rise you'll know its time to replace the filter.

Generally, your RODI filters should be replaced about once a year. But, as Brian said, you will know for sure if you check your TDS. You can get a TDS meter off of Ebay for around $10.

Stirring up your sandbed is a really easy way to cause ammonia/nitrite/nitrate spikes. I would advise not to mess with the sandbed if it's more than an inch deep. Instead, beef up your clean up crew so that they take care of the sandbed for you.

For 200 gal tank and 40 gal sump how big of a clean up crew do I need

Well I finally got my tank parimeters going well. I lost a couple sps in the process. I am also in the minks of another 90 gal. build. I get the 90 gal done I am tranfering everything over to it so I can redue the sump in mine and redue the sand and rock in my 200 gal without killing everything from an ammonia spike

Nice balls ,you have boas too??cause those aren't boas in your pic:wink:

Curious to see your scrubber growth..you never posted a pic of it...I started one a few days ago
