lighting shorting out

My t-5 lighting attached to my canopy keeps shorting out. I guess that's the problem. Every few days a couple of the lights just go out. My husband says the saltwater causes the lights to short out.

Someone my husband met whose brother builds aquariums said to put some kind of plexi glass accross the top of canopy between lights and top of water to prevent corosion in lighting. Wouldn't plexiglass cause the water to heat up?

How can I stop this shorting out thing?

I am going to assume that water is probably getting into the endcaps. Depending on what type of fixture you are using they do make waterproof endcaps that you can use to prevent this. Or you could mount plexiglass just below the bulbs, but above the tank top, just make sure there is ventilation to the bulbs.
