ok so i have been looking into a better cheaper option to the cree leds that can be more affordable for anyone looking to DIY,i found some 10 watt high power leds, they come in blue,450 to 470 nm and cool white 6k to 7k so a combo of both gets you awsome coral growth and the blue color as well,i would think you could get better then 24 to 36 inch deep tanks with the strength of these lights, all you would need is a good heat sink,i really want to try this but not sure how to wire,if my thinking is corect i should be able to wire 2 10 watters to a 20 watt driver? if i am wrong let me know or 5 to a 50 watt driver? then i would need to figure out how many leds i would need, these leds have a 160 deg width on the beam, any opinions would be nice, and if you guys think this would be to much power on a 75 gallon tank

10w LEDs?? Well i have never heard of them being that high, but thats just me... im kinda stooopid! :p
But with lenses 3w cree lights are 6 bucks from the rapid led crew.
I will let someone else chip in who knows a bit more about LEDs, but always be wary of buying stuff off eBay, i have never liked doing it too much! :D

well you can get 40watt LED's as well, but dont forget, these lights can have a very high par, And when you are chucking focused LED's on one spot, you could easily bleach corals. There is a reason they use Cree 3watt LED's, and thats because they are the best strength for our tanks.

I cant say 10watt is bad, but still, I would stick to the basics. And waddi is right, 3 bucks an LED isnt that expensive ;) its the controllers and drivers +heatsink and casing and fans that cost the money. Really.

what i was thinking is possibly adding 6 of the 10 watters, puting them on a 50 watt driver then narrowing that down with a dimmer, since they come with the heatsink already i woulnt need to buy one,so 70 bucks for the lights, another 50 for the driver then a dimmer at about 50 bucks and i am under 300 bucks total?
just my thinking correct me if i am wrong, ill look into the crees too,how many crees would i need to get good coverage on my 75?

Im no expert, but email Mike at RapidLED, he will tell you all you need to know. Always get a few opinions before you buy! :D

I did say i was stupid right?? hahah :bounce:
But also i said Cree 3w were 6 bucks with lense, thats a chinese knock off without a lense. :p
man, the lenses are like less than a buck. But, I could throw those in there also. They are all in the sight i linked. And yea, you did say Cree.:beerchug:

Just giving you an idea perhaps? idfk, take it for what it is. Did u see how big the tank was? that is a large tank with only 4, 50w LED's....

what are you saying dana, that i could use stronger LEDs? that tank you posted sure doesnt look very bright for 50 watt LEDs
LED's are tough to get a good picture of. In person the things are crazy bright, and most use a dimmer. I don't I have talked to to many that have their whites at 100%, close but not right at.

I would stick with 3 watt LED's because that way you wont bleach anything, but reef nutz. Im going to call you out on your spelling :D its 'site' not sight hahaha. :P seen it a few times XD
