Question about glass for light

Reefing newb
First the back story. I have an odesea 760w 48" light fixture on my tank that needed new bulbs. After having to drill out all the rusted screws, and replacing all the bulbs, the two pieces of tempered glass over the 250w halides seemed loose. Right before returning the light to my tank one of the glass lenses fell out and shattered. Me, being a little handy, I decided to cut a piece of plate glass to relace the broken on. Tada... Everythings great... Six hours later with the halides on I hear o pop and have to start picking glass out my sand. Now for my question. Can I have a piece of laminate glass cut for this lens, or does it have to be a manufactured piece of tempered glass? Are there any UV considerations I should be worried about?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I believe that particular piece of glass has to be a tempered piece that can prevent the uv rays from going into the tank.
